Mills Electric Co. has been an established electrical contractor in the Northwest since 1911. It was originally founded by Howard E. Mills. In the beginning Mills Electric Co. specialized in commercial service work and appliance/lamp repair.

Howard E. Mills’ son, Howard O. Mills Sr., later took over management of the company. Under his control, Mills Electric expanded its operations into the industrial and marine sectors. Its Marine Division serviced commercial and naval vessels at the Bellingham Shipyards in the 1940’s. Mills Electric later helped to build both pleasure and naval vessels for Uniflite Boat Builders located in Bellingham’s South Side.

Howard O. Mills, Sr. eventually passed control of the company over to his son Howard O. Mills, Jr. Howard O. Mills, Jr. expanded Mills Electric’s operations throughout the Northwest Region. During his tenure, the company performed work in Washington, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Alaska, California and Russia.

In 2007, John Huntley purchased Mills Electric. John is the first person outside the Mills family to operate the company since its inception in 1911. The family history of involvement in the British Columbia (B.C.) Forest Industry of the present owners is traced back to their great-great-grandfather, who, in the 1860′s pursued a logging career on B.C.’s West Coast.

The entrepreneurial spirit embedded throughout The Teal-Jones Group of companies started more than 60 years ago when Jack Jones, founder of the original company, established a one man cedar roofing mill after his return from World War II. Today wholly owned by sons Tom and Dick Jones the company prides itself as the largest privately held forest products company operating on the West Coast of Canada.

Company founder Jack Jones establishes a one man cedar roofing mill located at Lu Lu Island, New Westminster, B.C., Canada.

Built Drier Kilns at Surrey site.

1971 –
Created Columbia River Shake and Shingle in Nakusp, a town located in B.C.’s interior.

Created Cascade Cedar Ltd. – a cedar shake and shingle operation located in Revelstoke in B.C.’s interior.

Created Teal Cedar Lumber Divison – located in Salmon Arm in B.C.’s interior.

1993 –
Purchased Boston Bar Mill and Pitt Lake Logging – operations located in B.C.’s Fraser Canyon and Lower Mainland.

1999 –
Purchased TFL 47 – a Timber Forest Licence located in B.C.’s Queen Charlotte Islands/Haida Gwaii and headquartered in Sandspit.

2003 –
Built Titan Ridge – a cedar shake and shingle operation located in Port McNeill on B.C.’s Vancouver Island.
